Ultramicroscopy Materials Science

Kyushu University

Nanoscience and nanotechnology involve the ability to see and to control individual atoms and molecules, and to deliberately make materials at the nanoscale to take advantage of their enhanced properties such as higher strength, lighter weight, increased control of light spectrum, and greater chemical reactivity than their larger-scale bulky materials. Thus, nanoscience and nanotechnology is contributing to considerably improve, even revolutionize, many technologies and industries including, e.g. information technology, medicine, transportation, energy, food, environmental science, and so on. Electron microscopy is one of the indispensable tools to characterize the structures and the states of atoms in nanomaterials. This lecture will introduce some latest applications of the state-of-art electron microscopy in nanomaterial science.
